The Edinburgh Festival Fringe has been the launchpad for some of the world’s most celebrated artists. Countless stars and shows from stage and screen took their first bows in tiny rooms across the city.
From Phoebe Waller-Bridge to Richard Gadd, Robin Williams to Stephen Fry, we wouldn’t have Fleabag, The Mighty Boosh, Six, The Play that Goes Wrong, or Baby Reindeer without the Edinburgh Fringe.
But with costs for artists spiralling and audiences spread ever thinner across an oversaturated programme, we risk losing this vital pipeline feeding the cultural sector. With it, we risk losing the next generation of bold, game-changing artists.
